Sustainability in Schools

Schools in Australia are playing a critical role in educating and equipping young people to be the future drivers of sustainability and the guardians of the environment. Thankfully, we have many forward thinking and innovative schools that are leading a sustainable movement to conserve natural resources and create a greener future.

The latest national data shows that over 4m students were enrolled in approximately 10,000 schools nationwide in Australia, meaning there is a huge potential opportunity to promote and implement sustainability programs and initiatives in schools.

When people in talk about ‘sustainability’, they usually mean working together to put measures in place for our societies to thrive. It goes without saying, that this will not be possible if we continue to use natural resources at the current rate and damage the environment at the pace we have been. The environment needs to be our number one priority so that our ecosystems are not disrupted and damaged beyond repair because of lack of education and human choices.

Even with the right environmental protection intentions, it can be easy for schools and other educational establishments to make the wrong choices regarding sustainability initiatives and programs, to the point that instead of taking a step forward they have in fact taken a step backwards.

An example, is a school that decided, as part of their sustainability initiatives, to purchase thousands of school-branded stainless-steel water bottles for their students to have one each to keep – in the hope that this would reduce the number of bottles that the students themselves would purchase, in turn helping the environment. The issue however, was that the bottles were made in China from virgin steel, plastic and rubber and therefore not capable of being recycled.

If schools want to take sustainability seriously, it is important that they purchase the correct sustainable products. This is where the Buoy products come in. The Buoy Bottle, is the most sustainable bottle currently on the market in Australia and not only is it recycled from ocean bound plastics and manufactured with solar energy, it is recyclable if needed in the future. However, given how robust they are they will provide many years of use if looked after properly.
