Buoy Recycled Ocean Bound Plastic Drink Bottles
Buoy drink bottles replace single-use plastic products made from virgin materials with FDA-certified food-grade plastic, BPA-free reusable products made using solar energy from fully recycled ocean-bound-plastic that supports the circular economy. Intercepted before it enters the ocean, ocean-bound plastic is recovered from coastal regions, communities, rivers and beaches that lack proper waste management before being recycled.
Manufacturing the Buoy Bottles
The drink bottles are made in California from 100% recycled ocean plastic recovered from coastal regions and are produced with little or no waste. The drinking vessel opens at its widest point for ease in cleaning or adding ice cubes. The finger loop at the top of the bottle allows for easy carrying and can also be attached to a carabiner. The recycled plastic is HDPE that is BPA-free and food-grade certified. It is the most sustainable water bottle currently on the market.
The drink bottle measures 11″ high x 3″ diameter, holds 30oz (900ml) and is dishwasher safe.
How is the ocean bound plastic obtained?
Buoy partners with a recycling company in Los Angeles to intercept plastic in rivers before it can enter the oceans. They also collect rubbish in coastal regions with poor or no waste management and educate the local populations about the environmental impact of ocean pollution.
How do Buoy bottles help solve the problem?
The world is drowning in plastic. An estimated 8 million metric tons of plastic enters the oceans every year. Five giant plastic islands are currently floating in the oceans with a devastating impact on all life-forms. Single-use drink-containers represent 33% of all ocean rubbish.
Millions and millions of water bottles that are not capable of being recycled go into landfill every year. Steel bottles are not ordinarily crushable and therefore not recycled in regular council recycling schemes. Most plastic bottles are made with plastic that is not recyclable. Product misinformation and misunderstanding, as well as lack of proper education and waste-management systems over previous decades, are responsible for the alarming situation that we all find ourselves in.

Unique Bottle Design and Function
During the development process, Buoy introduced a unique feature – a second opening in the middle of the bottle. This innovation allows for easier cleaning and the addition of larger ice cubes, addressing a common complaint with reusable drink bottles.

Beach and ocean cleanings are very important and effective, but the one thing that we have to do first is to stop the flow of plastic into the oceans. We need to intercept plastic in rivers and other watercourses before it can enter the oceans, collect rubbish in coastal regions with little or no waste management and educate local communities about the environmental impact of ocean pollution.
Buoy have partnered with a recycling company in Los Angeles that does exactly this and they are active in different countries such as Haiti and Mexico and recover the ocean bound plastic so that Buoy can recycle it into new products. This leads to investment in these communities allowing the building of infrastructure in these regions, giving work to local people and preventing plastic waste from entering the ocean.
This type of plastic is much more expensive for Buoy to obtain, but it is essential for them to have the best possible impact on the environment with their products and supply chain.
